About Matthew

Professor Matthew Cuthbertson FAICD, FTSE, FRACI, FIML

Throughout a distinguished and multi-faceted career, Matthew has made major contributions to applied research, organisational development and product innovation; across a diverse range of business sectors including allied health, manufacturing and mining services. In 2003 his achievements were recognised with the award of a Centenary of Federation Medal.

Currently he is a Director of the Victorian Clean Technology Fund, Research Committee Chair at SmartCrete CRC and an Adjunct Professor with the Centre for Transformative Innovation at Swinburne University. Matthew is passionate about coupling excellent Australian science with business and policy innovation - to drive behavioural change, stimulate investment and solve complex real-world challenges. This has been a consistent focus in his previous governance roles with ARRB (Road Research) Group, Capsular Technologies, GroundProbe, Swinburne Ventures, the CRC Association and the CRC for Low Carbon Living. With postgraduate qualifications in both science and intellectual property law, Matthew’s early career was spent in advanced materials research with CSIRO and with ICI Australia, before he joined optical lens-maker SOLA International - where he rose to the position of global VP for Research and Technology. Later he joined CRC for Sensor Signal and Information Processing as CEO, and he was also the founding CEO of the highly successful CRC for Advanced Automotive Technology.

In 2012 Matthew moved to apply his skills and experience to senior leadership roles in the University sector, first as a Faculty Research Executive at RMIT and then in the university-wide role of Pro Vice Chancellor for Research Commercialisation at Swinburne.
