About Terry

Terry began his software development career in medical systems design. After concluding research with UCSD Medical towards neonatal pulmonary devices and two patents, he continued developing break-through medical systems for other international medical companies.

Complex system design became fascinating and he decided to help Motorola's satellite division design their first settop box, obtaining more patents. That was followed by military radio systems work at Titan Linkabit (the founder of CDMA). As founder of several startups, he became involved in large-scale telecommunications and application development companies for the wireless and telecom industries. Immediate preceding the Internet bubble, he helped found a B2B Internet trading hub.

Immediately after that disaster, he joined Sempra Energy Utilities, where he was the chief technology strategist and enterprise architect; ultimately pioneering the smart grid movement in USA, and co-founding GridWise Alliance. Due to his ground-breaking work designing and developing commercial grade microgrids, he formed General Microgrids, with many government-driven projects across North America, India, east Africa and Australia. His primary fields of interest remain in modernizing any nation's electric power grid and applying new ways of delivering sustainable, economic and reliable power, especially including microgrids.

He frequently consults for venture capitalists and is a highly sought after speaker on smart grid, distributed resources, microgrids, and standards and renewable energy integration. He served as Federal Advisor to the Dept. of Commerce NIST, as well as emerging technologies for the California Energy Commission. He has chaired many trade alliance groups and founded and chaired centers of excellence. His current interests are to move from smart grid (grid 3.0) to big-data grid (grid 4.0).
